1. Prepare the specimen

2. Select the load

3. Mount the specimen

Place the specimen flat-wise on two supports spaced per the standard, with the load applied at the centre span. Attach a dial gauge or deflection sensor to measure movement precisely.

4. Immerse in the oil bath

Lower the specimen and fixture into the HDT/VSP apparatus oil bath, already at or near room temperature.

5. Heat at controlled rate

Start the heating programme at 2°C per minute, continuously monitoring deflection as temperature rises.

6. Record the HDT

Note the bath temperature at the instant the specimen deflects 0.25 mm (Method A) or 0.32 mm past the initial deflection (Method B, less common in Indian labs). This temperature is the HDT.

7. Repeat for replicate specimens

Test a minimum of two to three specimens per batch and average the results – a single specimen result is not considered representative for material qualification.

The result is typically reported as F50 – the time at which 50% of the specimens have cracked. A longer F50 means better environmental stress cracking resistance.
