Compression Set Apparatus

Overview - What Is This Machine and Why Do You Need It?

Compression Set Apparatus

If you make rubber seals, O-rings, or gaskets, this is one of the most important tests in your QC lab. The Finetech compression set apparatus manufacturer India product answers one simple but critical question: after you squeeze a rubber seal flat for 22 hours at 70 degrees, how much of its original shape does it spring back to?

That number is called the compression set. A low number (say, 10%) means the rubber bounced back almost completely – it will keep pressing against the mating surfaces and keep the joint sealed. A high number (say, 60%) means the rubber stayed mostly flat – it has lost its springiness and will eventually leak. This is why every seal and O-ring manufacturer in India tests compression set before releasing a batch.

As a trusted rubber compression set apparatus India manufacturer, Finetech Engineering makes this test simple and accurate. The fixture is a set of stainless steel plates held together by bolts, with precision spacer bars between the plates. You put your rubber specimens between the plates, tighten the bolts until the plates touch the spacers (compressing the rubber to exactly 75% of its original height), and put the whole thing in an oven for the required time. When it comes out, you remove the specimens, wait 30 minutes, and measure how much thickness they recovered. That’s your compression set percentage.

As both an ASTM D395 compression set apparatus manufacturer India and an ISO 815 compression set apparatus manufacturer, Finetech Engineering makes this fixture from stainless steel – not the cheaper chrome-plated carbon steel that many competitors use. Carbon steel rusts inside hot, humid ovens. Stainless steel does not. This is the most important difference between a good compression set fixture manufacturer India and a cheap one: what looks the same on day one starts to corrode and warp after a few months inside an oven, affecting your spacer bar dimensions and giving you wrong results.

ASTM D395 Method B Constant Deflection Fixture India - Method A vs Method B: Which One Do You Need?
There are two ways to do the compression set test. The one you almost certainly need is Method B – here’s the difference in plain language:

Feature

Method A – Constant Force

Method B – Constant Deflection (This Product)

How it works

You apply a set load (weight) to the specimen and measure how much it squashes under that load.

You compress the specimen to exactly 75% of its height using the precision spacer bars of the ASTM D395 Method B constant deflection fixture India. The spacers control the deflection, not a weight.

What it measures

How much the rubber creeps (deforms slowly) under a constant load.

How much elastic memory the rubber loses when squeezed to a fixed position – which is exactly how a seal or O-ring is compressed in real life.

Used in industry?

Less common – mainly for load-bearing rubber mounts and bushings.

Yes – used in more than 90% of all industrial seal and O-ring specifications. This is what your customers almost certainly require from a compression set apparatus manufacturer India.

Specimen Sizes - Type 1 and Type 2

The test uses small cylindrical rubber buttons (like a coin-shaped disc). There are two standard sizes. Both are available from Finetech as a rubber compression set apparatus India package:

Specimen

Size

Standard

When to Use

Type 1 (Large Button)

29mm diameter x 12.5mm height

ASTM D395 compression set apparatus manufacturer India Type 1, ISO 815

The standard specimen – use this when you have enough material available. Most labs use Type 1.

Type 2 (Small Button)

13mm diameter x 6.3mm height

ASTM D395 Type 2

Use when your rubber sheet or moulded part is thin and you cannot get a 12.5mm tall specimen from it.

O-Ring (Actual Part)

Actual O-ring cross-section

ASTM D1414

Testing the actual seal instead of a moulded button. Needs a special O-ring fixture – contact Finetech.

Standard Test Conditions - Which Temperature and Time?

The fixture from your compression set tester manufacturer India goes into an oven at the required temperature. These are the most common test conditions used with the ISO 815 compression set apparatus manufacturer specification:

Condition

Temperature

Duration

When Is This Used?

Room temperature

23 deg C

22 or 70 hours

Basic material characterisation – good starting point for any new compound.

Standard (most common)

70 deg C

22 hours

The most widely specified condition worldwide for general-purpose rubber. If your specification does not state otherwise, use this. This is the default for any rubber compression set apparatus India test.

Moderate high temperature

100 deg C

22 or 70 hours

Automotive and industrial seals that operate at moderate service temperatures.

High temperature

125 deg C

70 hours

Engine gaskets, high-temperature automotive seals.

Very high temperature

150 deg C

70 hours

Extreme-temperature seals – FKM (Viton) and silicone compounds.

How to Calculate the Compression Set - Simple Formula

This is the formula every ASTM D395 compression set apparatus manufacturer India and ISO 815 compression set apparatus manufacturer product uses:

Symbol

What It Means

Plain English

t0

Original specimen thickness (before compression)

How tall the rubber button was when you started

ts

Spacer bar thickness

How tall the spacer bars are – they define how much you compress the specimen (75% of t0)

t2

Recovered specimen thickness (30 minutes after release)

How tall the rubber button is after you release it and wait 30 minutes

What the result means:

  • 0% – Perfect. The rubber bounced all the way back to its original height. Almost never happens in practice, but it is the ideal.
  • Below 15% – Excellent. This is premium seal compound performance. Good enough for critical sealing applications.
  • 15 to 25% – Good. Acceptable for most industrial seals and gaskets.
  • 25 to 40% – Moderate. May be okay for low-pressure or non-critical applications, but check your customer’s specification.
  • Above 40% – Poor. The rubber has lost too much of its elasticity. It will likely leak in service.
  • 100% – Complete failure. The rubber stayed completely flat after compression. No elastic recovery at all.

How to Run the Compression Set Test - Step by Step

Step 1: Prepare Your Specimens

  • Make Type 1 or Type 2 cylindrical rubber buttons using the Finetech compression set mould and hydraulic press
  • Or cut buttons from a vulcanised rubber sheet using the matching Finetech round specimen cutter (29mm or 13mm)
  • Leave specimens at room temperature (23 deg C) for at least 16 hours before testing
  • Measure and write down the exact height of each specimen (this is t0)

Step 2: Load the Fixture

  • Place your rubber specimens between the stainless steel plates of the rubber compression set apparatus India
  • Slide in the correct spacer bars (spacer height = 75% of t0 – your compression set fixture manufacturer India calculates these for you)
  • Tighten the bolts – the plates press against the spacers, compressing each specimen to exactly 75% of its original height

Step 3: Test at Temperature

  • Place the assembled ASTM D395 Method B constant deflection fixture India inside your oven or humidity chamber
  • Set the oven to the required temperature (most commonly 70 deg C)
  • Leave it for the required time (most commonly 22 hours)

Step 4: Measure and Calculate

  • Take the fixture out of the oven and immediately release the bolts to free the specimens
  • Put the specimens on a flat surface at room temperature and leave them for exactly 30 minutes
  • Measure the height of each specimen with a micrometer – this is t2
  • Use the formula to calculate compression set percentage for each specimen

Why Choose Finetech Engineering?

Stainless steel, not chrome-plated carbon steel. Most competitors selling a compression set fixture manufacturer India product use chrome-plated carbon steel. It looks shiny when it is new. After six months inside a hot, humid oven, the chrome starts peeling and the steel rusts. Your spacer bar dimensions change, which means your 25% deflection is no longer accurate, which means your test results are wrong. The Finetech stainless steel compression set fixture India costs a little more upfront and works accurately for years.

Precision spacer bars. The spacer bars in our ASTM D395 Method B constant deflection fixture India are precision ground to tight tolerances. The entire accuracy of your compression set test depends on these spacers being the right height. As a dedicated compression set tester manufacturer India, Finetech does not cut corners here.

Complete package from one manufacturer. As your compression set apparatus manufacturer India and compression set fixture manufacturer India, we also make the moulds (to prepare specimens), the round cutters (to cut specimens from sheets), and the hydraulic press. Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Imagine you take a rubber ball and squeeze it flat between two boards for a day. When you remove the boards, does the ball bounce all the way back to its original round shape, or does it stay a little flat? The amount it stays flat (as a percentage of how much you compressed it) is the compression set. A seal with low compression set bounces back well and keeps working. A seal with high compression set stays flat and eventually leaks. The compression set apparatus manufacturer India fixture is the tool that runs this test in a controlled, standardised way.
They are the same thing. Some people call it an apparatus, some call it a tester, some call it a fixture or a jig. Whether you search for compression set apparatus manufacturer India, compression set tester manufacturer India, or compression set fixture manufacturer India, you are looking for the same stainless steel plate-and-spacer assembly that holds rubber specimens under compression in an oven. Finetech manufactures all variants.
The stainless steel compression set fixture India goes inside an oven at temperatures between 70 and 150 degrees Celsius. Over weeks and months of use, cheaper chrome-plated carbon steel fixtures start to corrode in the hot, humid oven environment. When the steel corrodes, the spacer bar dimensions change. When the spacer dimensions change, your 25% deflection is no longer accurate. When the deflection is wrong, your compression set results are wrong. Stainless steel avoids all of this. It is the only material that makes sense for this application.
Method B means you compress the rubber specimen to a fixed position - specifically to 75% of its original height - and hold it there. The ASTM D395 Method B constant deflection fixture India uses precision spacer bars to define exactly where 75% of the original height is. This is different from Method A, which puts a fixed weight on the specimen. Method B is used in more than 90% of all seal and O-ring specifications because it matches the real-life situation: the seal is squeezed to a fixed position in its groove and held there.
Both standards measure the same property - compression set of rubber. ASTM D395 is the American standard used by most Indian labs testing to domestic or US specifications. ISO 815 compression set apparatus manufacturer products follow the international ISO standard, which is used by export-oriented manufacturers, European joint-venture companies, and labs that test to ISO 9001-aligned quality systems. The test principle and fixture are essentially the same - the main differences are in specimen dimensions and specific test conditions. The Finetech compression set apparatus manufacturer India product is compliant with both standards.
Below 15% is excellent - this is premium seal compound performance. Between 15 and 25% is good and acceptable for most industrial seals. Between 25 and 40% is moderate. Above 40% is poor and the compound will likely leak in service. However, always check your customer's specification - some applications have tighter requirements. The rubber compression set apparatus India test gives you the number; your specification tells you whether it passes or fails.
You need either the compression set moulds or the round specimen cutters - depending on whether you are moulding your specimens from raw rubber compound or cutting them from an already-vulcanised sheet. Most labs prefer moulding because it gives a clean, stress-free specimen. The Finetech compression set fixture manufacturer India range includes both the mould and the cutter, plus the hydraulic press. Ask for a complete package quote.
For the standard condition (70 degrees C, 22 hours), the total test time is: 16 hours specimen conditioning + 22 hours in the oven + 30 minutes recovery = approximately 39 hours from specimen preparation to result. It is mostly waiting time - not hands-on lab work. You assemble the ASTM D395 compression set apparatus manufacturer India fixture in about 10 minutes, put it in the oven, and come back the next day to measure.
As a compression set apparatus Thane Maharashtra manufacturer, Finetech Engineering is significantly closer to most buyers in Western and Central India than suppliers based in Ghaziabad (NCR). This means faster delivery (often 3-5 days vs 7-10 days), lower shipping cost, easier on-site visits for installation or troubleshooting, and same-state GST for Maharashtra buyers. Beyond logistics: the Finetech stainless steel compression set fixture India is made from stainless steel as standard - many Ghaziabad competitors still use chrome-plated carbon steel at the same or higher price.
